SRM Institute of Science &
technology ,Kattankulathur has adopted the 5 villages in Kanchipuram District for rural
development under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, a flagship programme programmed initiated by ministry of Human Resource
department under the auspices of
NSS to understand and work in rural
areas to customise new technology and implement existing government programmes.

The 5 villages adopted are as following
1.Anjur
2.Pattaravakkam
3.Thenmelpakkam
4.Orathur
5.Nattarasampattu
As a inaugural activity of UBA ,SRM
Institute Of Science and Technology
donated Furniture's worth Rs 2.00
lakhs to a Govt. Middle School, Thenmelpakkam village,Kattankulathur Panchayat union
on 29.11.2018 at 10.00am responding to the felt need of the community
which had complained lack of furniture
in the classrooms and children had to
sit on floor.
The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA)
inaugural function was graced by

The function began with welcome
address by School head master Mr. Anup kumar who highlighted achievements of
the school. He also listed out constraints faced by the school by lack of basic
amenities. He thanked SRMIST for donating furniture’s to the school and placed
few additional requests for the following items to enhance quality of education
in the school.

Establishing smart class room
2.
Projector
3.
Public Announcement system
4.
Support for salary for one kinder
garden teacher
5.
Teaching learning instruments
Dr.C.Muthamilselvan, Director (E&T) of SRMIST who was chief guest of the day stressed importance of rural orientation
of student, university students to innovate socially useful technology. He
invited School children to visit SRM University and get exposed university campus
to enhance their understanding and knowledge. He mentioned that SRMIST was
developing app to undertake survey in selected villages. He emphasised to make
science and technology relevant to rural areas.
Dr.Thirumurgan, project coordinator of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan gave the back ground
and objectives of the UBA programme. He shared that there was overwhelming
response from students and Teachers of SRM University. He expressed his
happiness to announce that totally about 600 students and faculties have
registered for volunteering for UBA project.
He also announced that training would be conducted to students to
undertake house hold level survey and conduct Gramsabha meetings to understand
the needs of the community.
Mr.Elumalaia, ex panchayat leader
in his speech highlighted his own contribution as panchayat leader in village
development. He welcomed SRM University gesture of engaging with rural
community and kind donation of furniture to the school. He stressed sanitation
and hygiene were the major issues faced in the villages. He requested SRM University
to facilitate construction of 100 toilets so that open defecation problem could
be addressed in the villages. He offered all the help in implement UBA
activities in SRM IST
Tmt.Nirosha, President, Management committee of Thenmel Pakkam School thanked the SRMIST for the furniture donation.
Dr.T.Rajshekhar
& Dr.Rajan R Patil committed to plan and coordinate NSS
and other volunteers in implementation of UBA Programme activities in five
adopted villages. Nearly, 15 NSS students volunteer represented student
volunteers That SRMIST will be working on following themes in the 5 adopted
villages:

Organic farming
·
Renewable energy
·
Water management
·
Artisans
·
Basic amenities and
·
Convergence
The programme ended with the Govt school authorities honouring the SRM
representatives with the shawl.
NSS volunteer thanked everyone and the function concluded with National
Anthem. The SRMIST Hostel arranged for the refreshment.
