Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and the Department of English and Foreign Languages jointly organized a short-term training program on enhancing the reading skills of grade VIII students at Panchayat Union Middle School, Thenmelpakkam, from July 30 to August 24. Inspired by SDG 4, which states, "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all," the training program has aimed to achieve an inclusive classroom environment by facilitating learning among students with varied proficiency levels. The resource person, M.M.Uma Maheswari, Ph.D., Asst. Prof., Department of English and Foreign Languages, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRMIST, Kattankulathur, and Ms. Anju, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, SRMIST, Kattankulathur, conducted a need analysis with teachers handling English at Panchayat Union Middle School, Thenmelpakkam. Based on the inputs, the resource person framed the module for the training program, which was conducted for three days during the afternoon sessions as requested by the school. The training program included interactive and technology-integrated practice sessions on reading strategies. Students were made to work on the worksheets that were distributed as handouts. The students gave satisfactory feedback in the concluding session, and the training program was successful in coming up with a module that could be taken as a model for practicing SDG 4 in the English classroom.
