World Habitat Day is celebrated each year
with a distinct theme aimed at addressing critical urban issues. For the
current year, the theme is "Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban
Future." Youth are crucial in shaping a better urban future by leading
initiatives like community clean-up drives, planting trees and advocating for
sustainable public transport. In recognition of World
Habitat Day, 16 students from the M.Sc. Disaster Management students, under the
leadership of Convenor Dr. Nedunchezhiyan V P and Co-Convenor Dr. Prabhudass
Batvari, along with Ms. Joe Infantia C G from the Department of Defence and
Strategic Studies in association with the SRM Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0,
successfully completed a tree plantation drive on October 7, 2024. As they
planted saplings, their passion for environmental sustainability was evident,
with students taking personal initiative to understand the proper planting
techniques and care for the young trees. This hands-on experience not only fostered
a sense of responsibility toward nature but also encouraged teamwork and
collaboration among the participants. The students gained valuable experience
not only by planting saplings but also through active engagement with the local
community. They had the opportunity to understand the villagers' native
practices and environmental knowledge, fostering a deeper appreciation for
traditional methods of habitat protection and sustainability.
